LZW compression: smaller and faster to transfer!

TIFF is the format of choice for saving important images. It is the common commercial and professional image standard. However TIFF images are generally large and therefore will take longer time to transfer. MisterClipping.com has a tip for this issue. TIFF images optionally use LZW compression, it is the compression of a file into a smaller file using a table-based lookup algorithm invented by Abraham Lempel, Jacob Ziv, and Terry Welch. Lossless means that there is no quality loss due to compression, it guarantees that you always can read back exactly what you saved, bit-for-bit identical, without data corruption.  This is a critical factor for saving master copies and important images. Image programs of any stature will provide LZW, but simple and free programs often do not pay LZW patent.

How to apply the LZW compression?

  • Open your TIFF file in Photoshop. Click 'Save as' and choose 'TIFF format'. you will then get the following dialogue window:

 LZW.JPG

  • Then you can transfer your TIFF file to our website or FTP server, your images will be clipped and returned to you exactly as we received them. After dowloading the images, you can open the file in Photoshop, save the file as TIFF and uncheck the LZW compression.
Now you can try to upload your LZW compressed TIFF files. No quality loss, only smaller and faster to transfer!

"What is the complexity level of my image?"

We guess that you always wonder which complexity level your image will be and how it is assigned by us.

Here are the criteria that we base on when we assign the level of complexity of your images:

1 – If your image is an object, it depends on:

- The shape of the object.

For example, if it’s square or a circle, it will be complexity 1 (€1.95 per image). The more edgy, complex of the path surrounding the object, the higher complexity level it will be.

- How many extra path lines besides the main one surrounding the object. The more extra path lines, the higher the complexity level.

For example, if your image is a wheel of a bike, although the shape is just a circle, but the inside of the wheel requires many extra path lines. Therefore, it will be complexity 4 (€7 per image).

Sample:

2 – If your image is a model

Normally, model images require masking (see our blog “Tip of the week – model image”), therefore, it will be complexity 4 (€7 per image)

However, there are certain model images that is not necessary to use masking (an image of a bald man for example, there’s not much hair to mask; or a girl that wears a hat covering all her hair). With these images, we still apply clipping. They might be complexity 3 (€4.5 per image)

On the other hand, we always work according to your requests. If you have images that need a price quotation in advance, don’t hesitate to email us and attach one sample image, we will estimate the complexity level and the price for you.

Model images?

If you have a model image (any kind of models: girls, boys, women, men, children…), we would advise you to upload in TIF, PSD or EPS format (if you have that version available, of course).

Why? We know that you would want your clipped model images look pretty/handsome/cute with perfect clipping paths for hair and other parts of the body, that’s why masking method, rather than clipping method, is preferred by our professional clippers. One thing you might not know about masking, is that it only accepts file types of PSD, TIF or EPS. Therefore it’s more convenient for both you and us to upload model images in TIF, PSD or EPS, and have them back – clipped with the same format!
